Thanks Bonnie! Mallee is an Aboriginal name for a group of eucalypts which grow to a height of 2 - 9 metres and have many stems arising from a swollen woody base known as a lignotuber. They have an umbrella-like leaf canopy and provide a fair bit of shade. This is the root base (lignotuber) of one of these trees after it had fallen over and been weathered over time. You can see many of these in the Australian countryside. (thus endeth the lesson)
