Einst gehörte die Kirche zur Burg des Landesherrn. Vom spätromanischen, wesentlich kleineren Vorgängerbau sind Bereiche der Westfassade erhalten. 1372 wurde die Kirche zu St. Peter und Paul Hauptkirche der Stadt. Ab 1423 begann der Umbau zur spätgotischen fünfschiffigen Hallenkirche, der 1497 fertiggestellt wurde. Dafür war die Errichtung einer Unterkirche im Osten notwendig. Diese weihte man dem heiligen Georg. Beim Stadtbrand 1691 wurde die prachtvolle mittelalterliche Ausstattung ein Raub der Flammen. Innerhalb weniger Jahre schmückten die Görlitzer Bürger ihre Kirche neu aus: u.a. 1695 Altar von George Heermann, 1703 Orgel von Eugenio Casparini mit einem Orgelprospekt von Conrad Büchau. Die neogotischen Türme aus Kunststein wurden 1891 aufgesetzt.

This church was once part of the castle of the sovereign. Some of the parts of the west facade have been retained from the previous Late Romanesque construction, which was significantly smaller. In 1372 the Church of St. Peter and Paul became the main church of the city. In 1423 conversion to a Late Gothic five-nave "hall church" began, which was completed in 1497. The construction of a crypt in the east was required to accomplish this, which was then dedicated to Saint George. In 1691 the magnificent medieval furnishings fell victim to the flames of a city fire. But within a few short years the citizens of Görlitz completely redecorated their church: the new additions included a 1695 altar by George Heermann and a 1703 organ by Eugenio Casparini with an organ back-cloth by Conrad Büchau. The neogothic towers made of artificial stone were added in 1891.
