Stilt Fishing
Stilt fishing is famous as a generational occupation among the fishermen of Sri Lanka with sons taking after their fathers. Each fisherman makes his own stilt on the reef nearly twenty metres from the sea shore and these posts are pasted on through the family. Newcomers can’t use others’ stilts. The fishermen walk from the shore to these stilts with baskets, fishhooks and fishing rods. They collect their day’s catch into the basket and carry it ashore.
