PART III
Except for older infants over 30-33 weeks, many premature babies need to be on a ventilator to help them breath normally. In addition, one of the problems that a premature baby may have on his first few days of life is Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) because of his immature lungs. Babies with RDS are usually on a ventilator and will probably also receive a medication called surfactant to help their lungs.
