We talked about her family while she ate grapefruit. I listened patiently, intently, my thoughts divided between interest in her past and pondering how/when/where to start photographing her. i was as interested in her upbringing as i was in taking her picture, realizing both really only get you glimpses of a person. i guess i try my best to get to know someone as well as i can within the timeframe of the photo shoot, knowing it's damn impossible. That she moved to a small town as a child, that her face looks wider than it is when i shoot from just slightly above her, that her sister, who hated moving out of LA, is the one who ended up staying in that small town, that she's got a stock "photo smirk" that pops up if i don't mention it. All just hints of a person.
